Bathroom Renovation for Accessible Living
Smith & Sons Cairns has completed another transformative renovation project, focusing on the en suite and bathroom of a family home. The clients, a young family with a member who has limited mobility, required significant modifications to accommodate his mobility issues and create a safer, more accessible living environment. The existing bathrooms featured dated, cheerless decor and posed serious safety concerns with large step-ups into the shower and bath areas. The goal of the project was to revolutionise these spaces, ensuring safe access for the client while creating a lighter, roomier atmosphere that would uplift the entire family's daily experience.
The renovation required a complete overhaul of both the en suite and main bathroom. The full strip-out included the removal of blockwork bath and shower areas, addressing the critical safety issues that had plagued the family. We replaced the waterproofing throughout and, as we surveyed the area, found that a faulty doorway was not installed properly. Of course, we wouldn’t ever leave a job half-baked, so we reinstated the doorway the right way.
The dated beige tiles were replaced with sleek white ones, instantly brightening both spaces and creating a sense of openness. The floor features elegant, textured Promenado white tiles, providing a clean, contemporary look while ensuring slip-resistance for added safety.
Throughout both bathrooms, we installed modern Reece bathroom fittings, combining style with functionality. These high-quality fixtures not only enhance the aesthetic appeal, but also offer improved usability for family members with mobility challenges.
The redesign focused heavily on eliminating step-ups and creating a level-access shower, allowing the client to navigate the spaces safely and independently. This thoughtful approach to accessibility extends throughout both bathrooms, with carefully considered, straightforward layouts that maximise maneuverability without compromising on style.
The transformation from dated and depressing to bright and spacious has had a profound impact on the family's quality of life. The new bathrooms not only address the practical needs of the client’s mobility issues, but also create an uplifting environment that benefits the entire family's well-being.
