Light, Space and Coastal Comfort
This renovation was completed for a lovely couple in their seventies who enjoy travelling but equally value relaxing and entertaining at home. Their lifestyle called for a space that felt open, bright and comfortable, somewhere to enjoy everyday living as well as time with visiting family and friends.
Originally, the home was a very typical 1980s coastal and canal style build. Constructed from single skin brick, it featured a small, enclosed living and dining area and a dated laundry, with limited natural light and airflow. While solid, the layout no longer suited the way the clients wanted to live.
The primary goal of the renovation was to create a larger living area that embraced an open plan design and maximised light and ventilation. To achieve this, a substantial 9.5 metre by 4.5 metre extension was added to the western rear of the home, positioned perfectly alongside the existing pool. The extension features striking scissor trusses set at a 20 degree pitch, resulting in a high, raked roofline that enhances the sense of space while still feeling warm and inviting. Two 1.5 metre skylights and tinted Bradnams windows flood the area with natural light throughout the day.
A key design recommendation was the addition of a servery, connecting the existing kitchen, fitted by Unique Coastal Kitchens, directly to the new living space. This simple change transformed the flow of the home. Despite engineering challenges requiring a full length 12 metre A-frame wall to be lifted into place, the finished result is a seamless, light-filled living zone with tiled flooring from National Tiles and a ceiling that truly defines the space.
