A Thoughtfully Designed Granny Flat for a Growing

This renovation project transformed an ageing seventies home into a functional and welcoming space tailored to the changing needs of a family caring for an adult son with a disability. With one son having moved out and another requiring daily support, the family sought a purpose built granny flat that offered comfort, independence and practicality while meeting strict NDIS requirements.

The original property included a 2015 extension that no longer served its purpose, so our team removed it and set the groundwork for a completely reimagined layout. The new build delivers a master bedroom with ensuite and walk in robe, a second bedroom with its own ensuite, and a full kitchen, living area and laundry. Every detail required careful planning, from compliant ramp gradients to wider openings, specific fixture heights and reinforced walls lined with ply sheeting for long term durability.

Working in a BAL 40 zone presented additional challenges, particularly the need for hardwood materials in the decking structure, but strong communication with suppliers ensured the project progressed smoothly and maintained a high standard throughout. The exterior features James Hardie fine texture cladding to complement the existing home, paired with merbau decking and screening that blends naturally with the surrounding environment.

Inside, the hybrid flooring, Gyprock walls finished in Dulux paint, Polytec cabinetry, Caesarstone benchtops and carefully selected tiles create a cohesive and inviting atmosphere that flows beautifully from room to room. The handover became a standout moment, marking the end of months of planning, research and problem solving. Seeing the family finally enjoy their new space made every effort worthwhile and highlighted the genuine care invested in the build.
